FAQs to make your path
more clear.

If you’re new to the behavioral healthcare field or just need a refresher, here are a few answers to frequently asked questions. This list is by no means comprehensive, but it is designed to give you a broad understanding of the most important concepts. If you just need to know the steps to becoming certified with the BACB, head to our page explaining the RBT certification process.

An RBT or Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional-level service provider who works in a home, school, community, or clinic setting directly with individuals diagnosed with autism or other behavioral health conditions or developmental disabilities. They provide behavior analytic services under the supervision of a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst).

The RBT credential is great for anyone interested in the field of behavior analysis or autism, including students pursuing psychology or education degrees, teachers, school paraprofessionals, and anyone interested in helping children with developmental disabilities learn the skills and behaviors required to increase their chance of independence and inclusion in school and community settings.

Not in all states. Check with your employer or prospective employer to find out if funding sources in your state require the RBT credential before you can begin providing services. However, most companies do provide a higher rate of pay for RBTs than for non-certified behavioral technicians.

The training itself is 40 hours. These hours can be done on a schedule that fits your needs, as long as they are completed in no less than 5 days and no more than 180 days. The required skill competency assessment will be completed in one day.

No, after training is completed, you must complete a skills competency assessment and then apply to the certification board (BACB) to take the RBT exam. Behaviorly will help walk you through the full application process once you are ready to apply.

No, the training only includes the 40-hour training content required by the BACB. However, Behaviorly does offer the skills competency assessment through one of our instructors as an add-on product. Our instructors also provide real-time feedback on areas for growth prior to assisting you in applying for the exam.

Renewal is required yearly, but the 40-hour training does not have to be completed again at the time of renewal. All that is needed for the renewal is an updated skill competency assessment.

You can keep your RBT credential during times when you are in between jobs or supervisors by applying for inactive status through your BACB account until regular supervision resumes.
