Registered Behavior Technician Jobs: From Passion to Profession

As of 2020, 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, leading to an increased demand for high quality professionals in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).  One of the most impactful roles in the field of ABA is that of the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).  The main responsibility of the RBT is to work directly with the individual, usually in a 1:1 setting, to implement skill acquisition and behavior intervention plans developed by Board-Certified Behavior Analysts.  All RBTs are supervised by BCBAs.

In this article, we will explore the many responsibilities of RBTs that have a long-lasting impact on those they serve, and why the RBT is arguably one of the most rewarding career paths for professionals looking to truly create a meaningful career, helping children and families navigate the world of Autism.

The impact of RBT jobs can be better understood through the following:

1. Bridging the gap between theory and practice: RBTs are the branch between behavior analytic theory and practical application.  While BCBAs develop comprehensive treatment plans, they also oversee multiple clients and RBTs, meaning they cannot adequately provide the 1:1 services each client needs due to time constraints and other responsibilities.  RBTs bring the plans to life by implementing directly with the clients in everyday situations, in homes, schools, community settings, or clinic-based settings.  Most clients receiving ABA therapy attend anywhere from 10-40 hours per week, making the work of the RBT crucial to success each day.  The RBT’s focus on implementing evidence-based strategies with the highest level of treatment integrity, ensures meaningful progress and positive changes for their clients.

2. Increasing accessibility to ABA services:  Increasing accessibility to ABA services: More RBTs in the field allows for increased accessibility to ABA services in rural areas that do not have local clinic-based services or community/school resources.  Training high quality RBTs to provide in-home services opens the door for all families to receive much needed support and guidance that would not be available otherwise.

3. Customized support for individual needs:  RBTs teach the way the individual learns.  ABA is not a one-size-fits-all approach and the role of the RBT is to understand and utilize each individual’s unique skills and learning style to make the most progress in a compassionate, least intrusive manner. Individualization is key to success.

4. Promoting positive behavior change: One of the main goals of ABA is to promote behavior change and skill acquisition in a positive way.  RBTs bring this vision to light by reinforcing desired behaviors and using least intrusive interventions to reduce harmful or challenging behaviors.  RBTs make lasting behavioral changes by leading with compassion and ensuring their clients receive ethical and effective treatment during every session.

Educational Requirements and Certification for Registered Behavior Technician Jobs

Getting an RBT job does require some specific requirements before you can begin doing the important work ahead. This is to make sure that those who wish to work as an RBT or in an RBT related job have the practical skills and  effective knowledge to help their clients as effectively as possible. Here is a description of the education requirements you will need to get a rewarding RBT job.

1. Education:

The minimum educational requirement to become an RBT is a high school diploma or its equivalent (e.g., GED).  Higher education degrees are also accepted.

2. RBT 40-hour training course:

Completion of an approved RBT Training course (online or in-person): RBT Candidates are required to complete a 40-hour training course that is approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). This course covers fundamental topics related to ABA principles, ethical considerations, data collection, behavior reduction techniques, reinforcement strategies, and professional conduct.

3. Pass the RBT Competency Assessment:

RBT Candidates are required to pass the RBT Competency Assessment (designed by the BACB),, which evaluates their proficiency in data collection, antecedent and consequence modifications, professionalism, ethics, RBT supervision requirements, maintaining client dignity, and more.

4. Application Process:

Upon completion of the 40-hour training and passing the RBT Competency Assessment, candidates can apply for RBT certification through the BACB. The application process involves submitting relevant documentation and paying the required fees.

5. RBT Exam:

Once approved by the BACB to schedule the RBT exam, candidates can then take their exam. Pass/fail data is available immediately after the exam.

6. Continuing education requirements:

Once certified, RBTs must meet continuing education requirements set by the BACB to maintain their credential. These requirements include completing an annual recertification competency assessment and renewal application. Additional continuing education is highly recommended, but not required.

The increasing demand for Registered Behavior Technician jobs shows the growing recognition of ABA’s meaningful impact on the lives it touches. Being an RBT requires dedication, compassion, and commitment to empowering minds, fostering positive change, and making a lasting difference in the lives of who they serve. As the demand for ABA services continues to grow year over year, RBTs will play one of the most pivotal roles in enhancing the lives of those individuals with behavioral challenges. And it is those same RBTs who will leave a lasting impact on the communities they serve.
